Kokki Kano: Japanese Fencing Champion

Early Life and Inspiration

Kokki Kano was born on December 19, 1997, in Ama, Japan. Prior to his fencing career, Kano spent eight years training in gymnastics. Inspired by Yuki Ota's silver medal in men's individual foil at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Kano began fencing in 2008. He transitioned from foil to épée while in high school after winning an épée tournament.

Fencing Career

Asian Games and Championships

In 2018, Kano emerged as a force in épée fencing. He claimed the team gold and individual bronze medals at the Asian Games in Jakarta. At the Asian Championships in Bangkok the same year, he added an individual bronze to his collection. In 2019, he captured another team bronze at the Asian Championships in his home country.

Olympic Gold

Kano's greatest triumph came at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021. Alongside teammates Satoru Uyama, Kazuyasu Minobe, and Masaru Yamada, he led Japan to the gold medal in the men's team épée event. In a thrilling final, they defeated the Russian team consisting of Sergey Bida, Nikolay Glazkov, Pavel Sukhov, and Sergey Khodos.

Education and Coaching

Kano graduated from the Faculty of Sports Science at Waseda University. His coaches include Yusuke Aoki and Alexander Gorbchuk.
