Biography of Krystian Zimerman

Krystian Zimerman is a Polish pianist and conductor. He received his training in piano playing from Andrzej Jasinski, initially through private lessons and later at the Katowice Conservatory. Zimerman made his public debut at the age of six and gained international recognition in 1975 when he became the youngest winner of the Chopin Piano Competition. Over the next year, he further developed his skills under the guidance of Arthur Rubinstein.

In 1980, Zimerman temporarily halted his concert career and settled in London, where he dedicated himself to improving the quality of his playing. His first concert after the hiatus was a tremendous success, with critics praising the freshness and vitality of his performances. Zimerman currently performs around 50 concerts annually, records music, and has been teaching at the Basel Music Academy since 1996. He is considered one of the greatest pianists of our time.

Zimerman is renowned for his interpretations of Chopin's music, but he also performs works by Beethoven, Liszt, Debussy, Szymanowski, and other composers. In 1988, he became the first performer of Witold Lutoslawski's Piano Concerto, which was dedicated to him. His discography includes recordings of all of Beethoven and Brahms' concertos, many compositions by Liszt and Chopin, as well as chamber music pieces for violin and piano by Respighi and Richard Strauss, performed in collaboration with Korean violinist Chung Kyung-wha.

For his outstanding contributions to music, Zimerman received the Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy Award in 1985 and the Leonie Sonning Music Prize in 1994. Additionally, Zimerman occasionally conducts the Polish Festival Orchestra, which he founded in 1999.
