Early Life and Education
Kurt Graunke was born in Berlin, Germany. His musical journey began at the tender age of twelve when he commenced violin lessons. In 1933, he joined the Stettin Municipal Orchestra. Subsequently, he pursued his studies at the Berlin University of the Arts. After his time in Berlin, Graunke worked in Würzburg.
Founding of the Graunke Symphony Orchestra
Following the conclusion of World War II, Graunke relocated to Munich. There, he gathered an ensemble of musicians and presented a benefit concert for the Bavarian Red Cross on September 25, 1945. The concert's success marked the inception of the Graunke Symphony Orchestra.
Over time, the orchestra expanded its repertoire, particularly in the realm of film scores. The Graunke Symphony Orchestra participated in the recording of soundtracks for over 500 films. Graunke remained at the helm of the orchestra until 1989. After his departure, the orchestra was renamed the Munich Symphony Orchestra.
Compositions and Awards
Graunke's compositional legacy includes nine symphonies, a violin concerto, a string quartet, and various vocal works. In addition to his musical endeavors, Graunke was an avid cyclist and even competed in the World Veteran Championships.
In 1985, Graunke was honored with the Upper Bavaria Cultural Award for his outstanding contributions to music. His passion and dedication have left an enduring mark on the German orchestral landscape.
