Biography of Kurt Koffka

Kurt Koffka (1886-1941) was a German psychologist known for his contributions to the study of visual perception of motion. He was born on March 18, 1886, in Berlin. He studied at the universities of Edinburgh and Berlin, and in 1908, he earned his PhD in philosophy. Koffka continued his education and research at various European universities, becoming a staff member (1911-1918) and later a professor (1918-1924) at the University of Giessen.

Professional Career

From 1927 to 1941, Koffka held professorships at Cornell University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Wisconsin. He also served as a research professor at Smith College. In 1932, he participated in a Russian scientific expedition to Central Asia. In 1939, he became a professor at the University of Oxford.

Founder of Gestalt Psychology

Alongside Wolfgang Köhler and Max Wertheimer, Koffka was one of the founders of Gestalt psychology. He focused his research on the visual perception of motion. Some of his notable works include "Zur Analyse der Vorstellungen und ihrer Gesetze" (1912), "Die Grundlagen der psychischen Entwicklung" (1921), and "Principles of Gestalt Psychology" (1935).

Kurt Koffka passed away on November 22, 1941, in Northampton, Massachusetts.
