Early Life and Education
Vienna Academy of MusicAustrian conductor, studied at the Vienna Academy of Music under Egon Josef Welles, Robert Lach, Alfred Orel, and Robert Maria Haas (from whom he inherited a profound interest in Anton Bruckner's music). He also took private lessons with Felix Weingartner.
Orchestral Leadership
Post-World War II ViennaIn 1946, he took over the Vienna Tonkunstler Orchestra after its reconstruction following World War II and led it until 1951.
Japan and Australia
From 1951 to 1954, he led the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo, and from 1956 to 1959, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Linz Opera and Bruckner Orchestra
Upon returning to Europe, he became the head of the Linz Opera in 1961. In 1967, he founded the Bruckner Orchestra based on the opera's orchestra, which has since become one of Austria's leading symphony orchestras. He directed the Bruckner Orchestra until 1975.
