Lyudmila Ivanovna Malevannaya: A Distinguished Journey in Theater
Early Life and EducationBorn on January 22, 1939, in Fedorovka, Rostov Oblast, Lyudmila Ivanovna Malevannaya embarked on her academic path as a student of the Faculty of History and Philology at the Krasnodar Pedagogical Institute. However, during her fourth year, she made a pivotal decision to pursue her passion for theater and enrolled in the prestigious Leningrad Institute of Theater, Music, and Cinema (LGITMiK) as a directing student.
Rise to Prominence
Malevannaya's talent shone brightly during her undergraduate years, particularly in the lead role of "Marie-Octobre" in her graduation performance. Immediately upon graduating in 1965, she moved to Krasnoyarsk, where she honed her skills as a leading actress and director.
Triumph in Leningrad
After returning to Leningrad, Malevannaya's career flourished. She joined the theater named after the Leningrad Soviet, followed by the Leningrad Lenin Komsomol Theater. Her performances as Anna-Lisa in "The Female Passenger" and Katya in "Farewell to Loved Ones" garnered critical acclaim and won her the coveted USSR Theatre Society (VTO) award as the "Best Work of the Season" in 1968 and 1971, respectively.
Joining BDT
Joining the renowned Bolshoi Drama Theater (BDT) in 1973 marked a new chapter in Malevannaya's career. She made her debut with the challenging role of Varvara Mikhailovna in "The Summer Residents." Her nuanced performance and seamless integration with the BDT ensemble earned her widespread recognition.
Trailblazing Roles
Throughout her tenure at BDT, Malevannaya portrayed a diverse range of compelling characters, including Natalya in "And Quiet Flows the Don," the Commissar in "Optimistic Tragedy," Irina in "Re-reading Anew," Elena Andreevna in "Uncle Vanya," Olga in "Three Sisters," Vera in "The Privates," Aлена in "I Built a House," and Sofya in "The Last." These roles showcased her versatility and her ability to delve into the complexities of the female experience.
Directorial Debut
In 1984, Malevannaya ventured into directing, staging Viktor Krymko's play "Daughter" on the BDT's Small Stage. Her directorial skills were met with critical and audience approval. Currently, the Small Stage presents her latest work, "Bengal Lights."
Leadership at the Theater of Vasilyevsky Island
Since 1988, Malevannaya has served as the Director of the Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) Theater of Vasilyevsky Island, where she continues to shape the theatrical landscape of the city.
