Origins

Larry Laffer, the notorious protagonist of the "Leisure Suit Larry" video game series, was created by Al Lowe in 1987. Lowe's inspiration for Larry stemmed from a boastful colleague named Jerry, who would eagerly recount his sexual conquests after returning from business trips.

The Leisure Suit Lothario

Larry is a middle-aged, balding, and unremarkable man who, despite his lack of physical attractiveness and social skills, aspires to pursue the affections of women. After losing his job and home in his late 30s, Larry decides to embark on a life-changing adventure by relocating to the gambling paradise of Lost Wages.

The Adventures of Larry Laffer

Throughout the series, Larry embarks on a series of misadventures while attempting to find love. He eventually loses his virginity, gets married twice (and divorced twice), becomes a hero on the fictional tropical island of Nontoonyt, and ultimately meets his soulmate, Passionate Patti.

Satire or Sexist?

Larry Laffer has often been criticized for his objectification of women and his portrayal as a misogynist. However, creator Al Lowe has argued that Larry is a satirical character intended to parody sexist attitudes rather than promote them. Larry's frequent rejections and humiliations serve as evidence of the folly of his behaviors.

Name and Influences

The name "Larry" was derived from the aforementioned colleague, while the surname "Laffer" was inspired by economist Arthur Laffer. Larry's signature greeting, "My name is Larry. Larry Laffer," parodies James Bond's iconic introduction.

Legacy

Despite his controversial nature, Larry Laffer has become an iconic character in the world of gaming. He has been ranked among the most popular classic video game heroes by "Retro Gamer" magazine and placed 45th on "Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition" list of the most popular video game characters in 2011. The series has continued with new installments featuring Larry's nephew, Larry Lovage, in "Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude" (2004) and "Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust" (2009).
