Early Life and Education
Born in January 1942 in Pécs, László Sólyom graduated from the Pécs University Faculty of Law in 1965, earning a Doctorate of Law. He further pursued legal studies at the University of Jena in Germany from 1966 to 1969.
Academic Career
Sólyom began teaching law at Budapest University in 1983. Previously, he worked as a research fellow at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS). In 2001, he became a corresponding member of HAS.
Judicial Career
From 1982 to 1990, Sólyom served as Deputy Chairman of the Hungarian Constitutional Court. Subsequently, he was appointed as its Chairman from 1990 to 1998. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Hungarian Democratic Forum, which became a significant political force in the country.
Presidential Tenure
László Sólyom was elected President of Hungary on June 7, 2005, serving a five-year term. During his presidency, he actively participated in the development of laws and legal acts following the transition to a new social order in Hungary.
International Recognition
Sólyom served as Chairman of the European Conference of Constitutional Courts from 1993 to 1996. In addition to his native Hungarian, he is fluent in English, German, and French.
