Lattimer Clark (1822-1898) was an influential English engineer who made significant contributions to the field of electrical engineering and metrology.

Early Career in Telegraphy

In 1850, Clark joined the Electric Telegraph Company, where he worked until 1870. His experiments on buried telegraph wires in 1853 were published in a government report on cables.

Submarine Telegraphy and Standardization

In 1860, Clark participated in a committee investigating submarine telegraphs. The committee's report, published later that year, proved invaluable in advancing the field. In 1861, he proposed the symbols "ohm," "farad," and "volt" for electrical units, which became widely adopted.

Electrical Tables and Standards

Clark collaborated with Robert Sabine to publish "Electrical Tables and Formula for Operators in Submarine Cables" in 1871. In 1873, he presented a paper to the Royal Society titled "A Single Cell Battery as a Standard of Electro Motive Force." This work established a standard for electrical voltage measurements.
