Laurie Byers

Lori Byers was born in Whangarei, New Zealand, in 1941. In 1962, he became the New Zealand Road Race Champion, showcasing his exceptional talent at an early age.
Olympic Debut
In 1964, Byers was selected to represent New Zealand at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He competed in two events: the 100km Team Time Trial and the 175km Road Race. In the Team Time Trial, Byers and his teammates finished 18th, while in the Road Race, he achieved a respectable 10th place, finishing in the same group as the eventual winner, Mario Zanin of Italy.
Commonwealth Games and Tour de l'Avenir
Byers' Olympic performance was followed by strong showings at two Commonwealth Games. In Perth, Australia (1962) and Kingston, Jamaica (1966), he secured bronze medals in the Road Race, further establishing his status as a competitive cyclist on the international stage. Additionally, in 1964, Byers participated in the Tour de l'Avenir, a prestigious cycling race for amateur riders, where he further honed his skills and gained experience.
