Lazar Gurevich: Soviet Handball Legend
Early Life and Basketball CareerLazar Gurevich was a renowned Soviet handball coach and former basketball player. Before and after World War II, he played for the Dynamo basketball teams of Kharkiv and Moscow.
Handball Coaching Career
After his basketball career, Gurevich transitioned to handball coaching. He led several teams, including the men's MIFI and the women's Trud (later known as Luch) teams. He also coached the Soviet national handball team.
International Success with Trud
In 1964, Gurevich guided Trud to victory in the European Champions Cup, marking the first international triumph for a Soviet club handball team.
Club Success with Luch
For nearly two decades, Gurevich coached the Moscow club Luch. Under his leadership, the team won the USSR Championship (7x7) from 1962-1965 and consistently placed in the top ranks of the league.
Legacy and Final Resting Place
Lazar Gurevich's contributions to Soviet handball were immense. He is remembered as a dedicated coach who fostered success both at the national and international levels. He was laid to rest at the Golovinskoye Cemetery in Moscow.
