Biography of Lee Byung-chul, Founder of Samsung Corporation
Lee Byung-chul, later known as Hoam, was born on February 12, 1910, near the city of Daegu in Korea. His father was a wealthy farmer who had accumulated a significant fortune, allowing Byung-chul to receive an education at Waseda University in Tokyo. After returning to his homeland, Byung-chul decided to start his own business.
Early Business Ventures
In 1936, Lee Byung-chul built a rice mill and opened a country store. In 1938, he successfully established the export of rice flour, sugar, and fish to neighboring countries such as China and Manchuria. This led him to create a trading company called Samsung Trading Company, which means "Three Stars" in Korean. In 1948, Byung-chul founded Samsung Company.
Rebuilding the Business
Although his entire business suffered a collapse in 1950, Byung-chul started from scratch the following year. He built a sugar refinery, a textile factory, and ventured into the insurance business. With the support of the then-president of Korea, Lee Syngman, Byung-chul rapidly expanded his activities and became the largest and wealthiest businessman in Korea by the end of the 1950s. By that time, Samsung Company was already involved in shipbuilding, factories, hospitals, and hotels.
Expansion and Innovation
In 1965, after the restoration of diplomatic relations with Japan, Byung-chul conducted numerous negotiations with major Japanese companies, which resulted in the establishment of Samsung-Sanyo Electronics in 1969. The new company began producing hair dryers and black-and-white televisions. In 1973, Samsung-Sanyo Electronics merged with Semiconductor Co., forming a semiconductor manufacturing plant and gaining independence from Japanese manufacturers. The company started producing refrigerators, washing machines, and other household appliances, and since then, it has been known as Samsung Electronics. In 1978, the first Samsung office was opened in the United States.
Legacy and Success
From the early 1980s, the corporation was led by Byung-chul's son, Lee Kun-hee. However, Byung-chul remained the formal chairman of Samsung Corporation until his death on November 19, 1987. Today, Samsung Electronics is one of the leaders in the production and sales of various electronic devices, ranging from large industrial systems to small nanotechnological devices, such as Samsung netbooks.
In the second half of 2008, the first Samsung netbook, the NC10, was released and immediately received enthusiastic reviews from users and high ratings from experts.
