Fitness for Over 40: A Smarter, Not Harder Approach

For those over 40, staying active can seem like a daunting task. However, a former Australian "Survivor" contestant insists that the key to health in your later years is to exercise "smarter," not harder.

The Importance of Staying Active

Lee Carseldine, a former cricketer and runner-up on the third season of "Australian Survivor," believes that maintaining an active lifestyle after 40 is an achievable goal. "It's really not that hard to implement healthy habits," says Carseldine. "People over 40 don't need to increase their exercise; they just need to become more active."

Shorter Workouts, Better Results

"As you get older, shorter bursts of exercise are actually better for you," Carseldine explains. "This makes it easier to get the exercise done and make it part of your routine."

Incorporating Variety

Carseldine, now an ambassador for the fitness tracker company Striiv, shares tips for maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle. According to the former cricketer, exercise can become boring and ineffective if you don't change things up. "Don't stick to the same workout routine for more than two weeks," Carseldine advises. "Mix it up with boxing, cardio, running, and outdoor activities."

Engaging the Family

While it's not recommended to take your young children to the gym, it's important to keep them active as well. "Kids tend to emulate what their parents do, and there's no better way for them to see that exercise is important than by watching you do it yourself," Carseldine says. Take them for walks in the park or utilize the playground equipment when they're playing.

Core Strength and Stability

Core strength is crucial for maintaining flexibility and posture, which becomes increasingly important as we age. "Core strength can help prevent injury and falls later in life," Carseldine explains.

Weight Training for Bone Density

Some may shy away from weight training in the gym, but Carseldine insists that strengthening your body can help reduce your risk of "silly falls." "Strength training can help increase bone density, which is good for balance and coordination," Carseldine explains. "This can help reduce the likelihood of having a silly fall later in life."

Getting Started

If you're over 40, it's not too late to start an exercise program. Don't see it as a chore or an overwhelming task. "It's never too late to start a new routine," Carseldine says. "You'll be surprised by how enjoyable it can be."
