Early Life and Education

Leo Allatiuswas a Latinized Greek writer born on the island of Chios, Greece, in 1586.

Career and Vatican Service

Allatius served as a librarian for Cardinal Francesco Barberini and later became the Keeper of the Vatican Library from 1661 until his death. He was appointed to this position by Pope Alexander VII.

Polemical Writings

Allatius aimed to demonstrate the harmony between the Roman and Greek Churches. He advocated for the complete submission to the Pope as the infallible authority. His main works include:

"De ecclesiae occidentalis atque orientalis perpetua consensione libri tres" (1648)

"De utriusque ecclesiae occidentalis atque orientalis perp?tua in dogmate de purgatorio consensione" (1655)

Historical Significance

Correspondence and Legacy

Allatius's extensive correspondence (over 1,000 letters in Greek and Latin) is preserved at the Oratorian Library in Rome. He passed away in Rome on January 19, 1669.
