Early Life and Interest in Electronics

Clarence Leonidas Fender, better known as Leo, was born on August 10, 1909, in Anaheim, California. From a young age, Fender exhibited a keen interest in electronics. At the age of 13, his uncle, an electronics store owner, gave him a box of discarded car parts and batteries. This sparked Fender's fascination with radio repair, and he soon began repairing old radios in his parents' garage.

Education and Early Career

After graduating high school in 1928, Fender attended Fullerton Junior College. While there, he pursued his interest in electronics, but avoided formal coursework in the subject. After college, he worked as an ice deliveryman and later as an accountant for the Consolidated Ice and Cold Storage Company.

Fender Radio Service and the Beginnings of Guitar Building

In 1938, Fender opened his own radio repair shop, Fender Radio Service, in Fullerton, California. Local musicians began to approach Fender to build loudspeakers, and he eventually signed a contract to create six for a band. This led to Fender's increased involvement in the music industry.

Early Guitar Designs and Founding of Fender

Fender's guitar designs emerged in the 1950s, influenced by the popularity of electric guitars. In 1950, he partnered with Doc Kauffman to form the Fender Electric Instrument Company. The company initially produced the Broadcaster guitar, later renamed the Telecaster, followed by the Precision Bass and the Stratocaster. Fender's guitars and amplifiers quickly became popular in popular music.

Sale of Fender and Formation of Music Man and G&L

In 1965, Fender sold his company and the name to CBS Musical Instruments Division due to health concerns. However, he remained as a consultant for five years and was prohibited from producing guitars for the following five. In 1976, Fender partnered with his former associates to found Music Man, where he developed new guitar designs. Later, he left Music Man and co-founded G&L Musical Products with George Fullerton in 1980.
