Nikolai Gernevich Markeev: A Respected Naval Officer and Veteran
Early Life and EducationBorn on November 16, 1875, in the Volyn Governorate, Nikolai Gernevich Markeev embarked on his military journey in 1892. He graduated from the Naval Cadet Corps on September 11, 1895, and later completed the Artillery Officer Class. In 1904, he was recognized as an artillery officer of the 1st rank.
Naval Career
Chinese Campaign and Russo-Japanese War:Markeev played a pivotal role in the Boxer Rebellion of 1900-1901 and the Russo-Japanese War.
Command of Destroyers:From 1909 to 1911, he commanded various destroyers, including the "Smetlivy," "Moshchny," and "Emir Bukharsky."
World War I:In 1914, Markeev became a captain of the 1st rank. He led the 4th and later the 6th Destroyer Division of the Baltic Fleet. On August 17, 1915, he assumed command of the battleship "Sevastopol."
Civil War and White Movement
During the Russian Civil War, Markeev joined the White Army on the Northern Front (1918-1920). He was promoted to counter-admiral in 1917.
Emigration and Death
Following the White Army's defeat, Markeev emigrated to Italy. He passed away in Rome and was laid to rest in the Testaccio Cemetery.
