Biography of Leopold III

Leopold III, also known as Leopold the Saint, was born in 1073 and passed away on November 15, 1136. He was a Margrave of Austria from 1095 to 1136, belonging to the Babenberg dynasty. Leopold III is considered the patron saint of Austria and Vienna.

Early Life and Rise to Power

Leopold III was the son of Leopold II, the Margrave of Austria, and Ida of Ratelnberg. He laid the foundations for Austria's future influence. In 1104, he supported Prince Henry in his rebellion against his father, Emperor Henry IV, earning the prince's favor. When Henry became the new Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1105, he arranged for Leopold III to marry his sister. This marriage significantly increased Austria's authority within the empire.

Political Achievements

Leopold III's political strategy was characterized by maintaining peaceful and friendly relations with neighboring states, the Emperor, and the Pope. In 1125, his candidacy was even proposed for the imperial elections, but he declined. Under his rule, Austria greatly strengthened and expanded its independence within the German Empire.

Promotion of the Church

Leopold III actively supported the Church and founded several important monasteries in Austria. These included Klosterneuburg in 1108, which, according to legend, was chosen by the Virgin Mary herself as the site for its construction. He also established Heiligenkreuz in 1133 and Klein-Mariazell in 1134. His dedication to the Church led to his canonization in 1485. In 1663, he was declared the patron saint of Austria. His feast day, November 15th, is an official holiday in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Upper Austria.

Marriage and Children

Leopold III married Agnes of Salzburg, the daughter of Emperor Henry IV. Together, they had several children, including:
- Adalbert, who married Hedwig Arpad, the daughter of Almos, the King of Croatia.
- Leopold IV, who succeeded his father as the Margrave of Austria and later became the Duke of Bavaria.
- Henry II Jasomirgott, who became the Margrave and Duke of Austria, as well as the Duke of Bavaria and the Count Palatine of the Rhine.
- Conrad, who served as the Bishop of Passau and later became the Archbishop of Salzburg.
- Gertrude, who married Vladislaus II, the King of Bohemia.
- Elizabeth, who married Herman II, the Count of Winzenburg.
- Berta, who married Henry III, the Burgrave of Regensburg.

Leopold III's descendants played significant roles in the history of Austria and the surrounding regions.
