In the midst of a music scene dominated by traditional genres, Nikolai Arutyunov emerged with the ambitious dream of establishing a blues band in the Soviet Union. Despite facing skepticism and limited knowledge of the genre, Arutyunov founded the "Vysshaya Liga Bluza" in 1976, only to encounter obstacles that prevented its immediate success. Undeterred, he persevered, eventually shortening the band's name to "Liga Bluza" in 1982.

International Recognition and Musical Evolution

The release of "Liga Bluza" in 1986 marked a significant milestone for the band, garnering international attention. In 1987, they achieved professional status, welcoming renowned musicians such as guitarist Sergei Voronov, bassist Alexander Solich, drummer Yuri Rogozhin, and saxophonist Garik Yeloyan. With a diverse repertoire that included both English and Russian blues, Liga Bluza embarked on their first international tour in 1988, solidifying their reputation as a force to be reckoned with on the global stage.

A Stellar Lineup and Unforgettable Moments

The late 1980s saw the band's lineup undergo several changes, each bringing a unique contribution. Vladimir Dolgov's guitar prowess and Viktor Telnov's basslines enhanced the band's sound, while Andrey Shatunovsky's drumming and Lev Zemlinsky's piano playing added depth and nuance. This lineup graced the stage of the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in 1994 and collaborated with blues legend B.B. King during his Moscow tour in 1996.

He embarked on a project with guitarist Dmitry Chetvergov, dubbed "Chetverg Arutyunova," in 1999. Despite their efforts, the diminishing interest in blues presented challenges, leading to a decline in touring opportunities.
