Biography of Lilian Baylis
Early Life and CareerLilian Baylis was born in London, England. She was introduced to music at a young age and began performing early on. Alongside her performances, she also taught less experienced performers. Baylis' family managed a project called 'The Gypsy Revellers', and as a teenager, she participated in multiple acts in one night. Her life was greatly influenced by her aunt, Emma Cons, who was involved in charitable work, particularly improving the living conditions of the residents in London slums. In 1891, 'The Gypsy Revellers' were offered a long-term contract in South Africa, leading the Baylis family to move to Johannesburg for a period of time. During their time there, Baylis taught music and dance and lived a comfortable life.
Return to London
In 1898, Baylis had to return to London to recover her failing health, with plans to go back to Africa in the future. However, the Anglo-Boer War disrupted her plans, forcing her to stay in London. Baylis and her aunt worked at a concert hall and café near Waterloo Station, gradually taking on more responsibilities. Eventually, Baylis decided to settle in England permanently, abandoning her plans for Africa. In 1912, Emma Cons passed away, and the management of the Old Vic Theatre, which was known as the Old Vic at the time, completely passed into Baylis' hands.
Accomplishments
One of Baylis' most significant achievements as the director of the Old Vic Theatre was the staging of a complete cycle of Shakespeare's plays, from 'The Taming of the Shrew' in 1914 to 'Troilus and Cressida' in 1923. In 1925, Baylis embarked on a campaign to restore the then-abandoned Sadler's Wells Theatre. Eventually, her goal was achieved, and on January 6, 1931, a grand opening ceremony took place. The highlight of the ceremony was the performance of 'Twelfth Night' with John Gielgud as Malvolio and Ralph Richardson as Toby Belch.
Success in Theatre and Ballet
For several years, ballet, opera, and theatre companies from the Old Vic Theatre performed alternately in the newly restored Sadler's Wells Theatre. In 1935, ballet and opera permanently settled in Sadler's Wells, while the Old Vic Theatre remained home to the acting company. In 1928, Baylis hired Ninette de Valois, who revitalized British classical ballet at Sadler's Wells. Notable dancers such as Margot Fonteyn and Robert Helpmann emerged under de Valois' guidance, and her classical productions attracted internationally renowned stars like Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin. Constant Lambert served as the musical director during this time, and choreography was done by de Valois and the rising star Frederick Ashton.
Legacy
Many outstanding actors also came out of Baylis' theatre company. Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Peggy Ashcroft, Sybil Thorndike, Edith Evans, Alec Guinness, Michael Redgrave, Maurice Evans, and Ralph Richardson all took their first steps in Baylis' troupe. Lilian Baylis passed away on November 25, 1937, after a prolonged illness. The following night, a new production of 'Macbeth' with Olivier and Judith Anderson was scheduled to take place at the Old Vic Theatre. Baylis' body was cremated.
