A Miracle Born at 23 Weeks

At the tender age of 23 weeks, a baby girl defied the odds of survival, defying the doctors' predictions of a mere 5% chance. Today, at five years old, Lily Burrows is thriving as any other child, preparing for primary school.

Advances in Preterm Care

Advancements in medicine have significantly improved the survival rates of prematurely born infants, particularly those at 23 weeks. While UK law permits legal abortions up to 24 weeks, pro-life groups advocate for restricting this limit to 12 weeks, arguing for the preservation of all viable lives.

Rising Survival Rates

Recent studies indicate a substantial increase in the survival rate of 23-week premature babies. Data from 25 hospitals over four years revealed 120 survivors. Last year, Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust saw the survival of 6 out of 8 infants born at 23 weeks, while University College London Hospitals saw the survival of 6 out of 7. North Bristol NHS Trust witnessed the survival of all five such babies born in the past year.

Challenges Remain

Nationally, survival rates may be lower, especially in smaller hospitals without specialized neonatal units. However, with proper care, the majority of extremely premature infants have a good chance of survival.

Legal Abortion Debate

Amidst these promising survival rates, approximately 560 abortions occur annually at 23 weeks in the UK. The issue is expected to ignite significant debate regarding the legal abortion time limit.

Lily's Triumph

When Lily Burrows was born far ahead of schedule, her doctors did not sugarcoat the grim prognosis of a mere 5% survival rate. They warned of severe health complications and potential lifelong medical needs due to her underdeveloped body.

A Mother's Determined Hope

Undeterred, 30-year-old Gillian Lindsey refused to lose faith. Lily, too, exhibited an indomitable spirit, emerging victorious from her initial fight for life. At five years old, she is a vibrant and healthy young girl, donning her first school uniform.

A Remarkable Transformation

Today, it is difficult to recognize the fragile newborn entangled in tubes and wires in the cheerful blonde-haired child Lily has become. Despite a near-tragic moment when doctors considered withdrawing life support, her determination prevailed.

A Thankful Mother

After a 101-day stay at Edinburgh Royal Hospital following her birth in March 2009, Lily finally joined her mother at home. Now embarking on her primary education at St. Mary's Primary School in Bonnyrigg, she is a testament to the dedication of the midwives, doctors, and nurses who cared for her in her most vulnerable days.
