Henry Brandon, 1st Earl of Lincoln
Early Life and FamilyHenry Brandon was the second son of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, and Mary Tudor, the younger sister of King Henry VIII. Born on May 8, 1523, he shared his name with his elder brother who had died in infancy, leading to confusion in historical accounts.
Relationship with the Royal Family
Through his mother, Henry was closely related to the ruling Tudor dynasty. He was the nephew of Margaret Tudor, Queen of Scotland, and a first cousin once removed to King James V. His sisters were Frances Brandon and Eleanor Brandon.
Earldom of Lincoln
Henry was granted the title of Earl of Lincoln by King Henry VIII on June 18, 1525. The king had initially arranged for him to marry the wealthy heiress Catherine Willoughby, but upon the death of his mother in 1533, Suffolk married his son's fiancée himself.
The Throne of England
Throughout his life, Henry had a remote possibility of inheriting the English throne. King Henry VIII had no legitimate male heir for many years, and his daughters Mary and Elizabeth were ineligible to succeed. Henry Brandon died just a year after his mother, on March 1, 1534, leaving no descendants.
Line of Succession
Despite Henry's early death, the children of Mary Tudor remained in the line of succession. The Act of Succession of 1543 placed them after King Henry VIII's children and his sister Margaret Tudor's descendants. His granddaughter, Lady Jane Grey, briefly became Queen of England in 1553.
