In 2010, she was part of the ensemble cast in a new interpretation of the classic story 'Beauty and the Beast'.
Hamilton gained recognition for her role as Rebecca Washington in the ABC series 'The Practice', which focuses on a law firm in Boston. Critics also praised her performance in the film adaptation of Tony Morrison's novel, 'Beloved', directed by Jonathan Demme.
In the theater world, Hamilton has performed in a production of Shakespeare's 'Measure for Measure', as well as in plays such as 'Henry IV: Part 1 and 2', 'Valley Song', and 'A State of Ohio Murders'. She made her Broadway debut in the original cast of the plays 'The Piano Lesson' and 'Gem of the Ocean' by playwright August Wilson.
Lisa Gay Hamilton was born on March 25, 1964, in Los Angeles, California, but spent most of her childhood in Stony Brook on Long Island, New York. Her father, Ira, worked as an engineer before becoming a general contractor, while her mother, Tina, held a master's degree in social work and worked with the Girl Scouts.
Hamilton developed a love for theater at a young age. In the 1970s, she watched several non-Broadway productions by the theater company 'Negro Ensemble Company', including 'The Soldier's Tale' and 'The First Breeze of Summer'. She initially enrolled in the theater program at Carnegie Mellon University but was accepted into the prestigious Tisch Drama School at New York University the following year.
Hamilton began her career in classical theater, playing her first notable role alongside Kevin Kline in 'Measure for Measure' at the Shakespeare in New York Festival. Her subsequent work solidified her status as a serious dramatic actress, and her portrayal of a young, ambitious South African singer in 'Valley Song' by playwright Athol Fugard earned her an 'Obie' award, the 'Clarence Derwent Award', a nomination for 'Best Actress' at the 'Ovation Awards', and a nomination for a 'Drama Desk Award'.
She received her second 'Obie' award, a nomination for a 'Lucille Lortel Award', and critical acclaim for her role as Suzanne Alexander in Adrienne Kennedy's 'Ohio State Murders'.
In addition to her theater work, Hamilton has appeared in at least two dozen films, with her most recent being the drama 'Mother and Child' in 2009. She also had a role in the series 'Men of a Certain Age', working alongside actors Ray Romano and Andre Braugher. In August 2009, Hamilton married her partner, historian and author Robin D. G. Kelly. They currently reside in Los Angeles, California.
