A German Centenarian Breaks Barriers in Politics

Electing a Voice for the Elders

A remarkable 100-year-old German woman named Liesel Heise has made history by running for and winning a seat on her local town council. This former physical education teacher has embarked on a new chapter in her life, becoming a councilwoman in her hometown of Kirchheimbolanden, Rhineland-Palatinate.

Advocacy for Accessibility

During her campaign, Heise vowed to advocate for the reopening of her town's swimming pool, which closed in 2011. As an active member of her local Protestant community, Heise had previously spoken out on the issue but felt her concerns as an elderly citizen were ignored.

"When I'd talk about the pool, they'd often turn off my microphone," she recalled. "I'd have to keep quiet because it was pointless to continue."

Age as an Advantage

"But now that I'm 100, my position has changed. I have a voice that people will listen to when I speak my mind," Heise asserted.

On May 26, voters in Kirchheimbolanden (known affectionately as Kibo), a town of 8,000 in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, heeded Heise's message. She ran on the platform of "We for Kibo," a faction that campaigned for "sustainable development and diverse civic participation."

Breaking the Mold

"We're delighted to have Liesel Heise on the council," said Helga Bürmann, a board member of the faction. "She has helped us reach out to the public so that our message can be heard and our goals can be realized."

Initially placed 20th on the faction's list, Heise's media attention and the respect she has earned within Kibo propelled her to a winning spot.

A Legacy for the Youth

Now a grandmother and great-grandmother many times over, Heise is thrilled to finally have a platform to "do something for the young people." Supporting pro-European politicians and advocating for closer EU integration, she insists that age should not be a barrier to political participation.
