Early Life and CareerLois Duncan was born on April 28, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She grew up in Sarasota, Florida, where she began writing short stories at the age of 10. At age 13, her first story was published in a magazine.
Journalism and Family
Lois attended Duke University but dropped out when she married and started a family. She pursued a career in journalism, writing over 300 articles for major magazines such as "Ladies' Home Journal" and "Reader's Digest." After her first marriage ended in divorce, she remarried and had two more children.
Shift to Fiction
Lois Duncan became known for her suspenseful novels, particularly those aimed at teenagers. Her book "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (1973) gained immense popularity after its 1997 film adaptation. However, Duncan expressed dissatisfaction with the film's comedic horror elements, which deviated from her original youth-oriented novel. Her other notable works include "Hotel for Dogs" (1971), which was later adapted into a film starring Emma Roberts.
Tragedy and Unresolved Mystery
In 1989, tragedy struck when Lois Duncan's 18-year-old daughter, Kaitlyn Arquette, was fatally shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Despite police concluding it as a random shooting, Lois conducted her own investigation. She implicated a Vietnamese gang involved in fraud and drug trafficking, which she suspected her daughter's boyfriend was connected to.
"Who Killed My Daughter?"
Duncan's research culminated in the 1992 book "Who Killed My Daughter?" However, the case of Kaitlyn's murder remains unsolved. In 2001, Lois stated that her daughter was killed for "reaching into organized crime that was protected by certain legislators." She claimed that law enforcement disregarded this evidence.
