Lokenath Bhattacharya was a renowned Indian poet and novelist who wrote prolifically in the Bengali language.
Early Life and Education
Born into a family of scholars, Lokenath was the son of a Sanskrit professor. His family relocated to Calcutta in 1934, where he pursued his studies in philology at Rabindranath Tagore's Vishva-Bharati University in Shantiniketan. He later studied in Calcutta and Paris, delving into the intricacies of language and literature.
Literary Career
Bhattacharya's literary prowess gained international recognition through the efforts of the French poet Henri Michaux. His first book of poetry was published in Paris in 1975, introducing him to a wider audience. He became a regular resident of France in 1985.
Throughout his career, Bhattacharya penned numerous novels, including "Udayan" (1966) and "Ardhha Aatore Natak" (1983). He also published four books of poetry and a collection of essays. Many of his works were translated into French, with one novel translated into English.
Translating French Literature
In addition to his original works, Bhattacharya played a significant role in translating French literature into Bengali. Among the authors he translated were Rimbaud, Michaux, and Char.
