Early Life and Education
Franz Kielhorn was born in Hildesheim, Germany, in 1839. He developed a fascination for Sanskrit at a young age and studied the language at the University of Göttingen.
Academic Career in India
In 1866, Kielhorn was appointed Professor of Sanskrit at Deccan College in Pune, India. He remained in this position until 1872, when he returned to Göttingen as a Professor of Sanskrit.
