Lou Del Valle was an American professional boxer who made history as the WBA light heavyweight champion from 1997 to 1998.
Early Career and Ascent to Championship
Born in 1969, Del Valle began his professional boxing career in January 1992. After several impressive victories, he challenged for the WBA light heavyweight title against Virgil Hill in April 1996 but fell short on points. Undeterred, he rebounded in September 1997, knocking out Eddie Smulders in the 8th round to capture the vacant WBA title.
Unification Fight with Roy Jones Jr. and Controversial Knockdown
In July 1998, Del Valle faced the formidable Roy Jones Jr. in a unification bout for the WBA and WBC light heavyweight titles. Jones dominated the fight, showcasing his superior speed and precision. However, in the 8th round, Del Valle delivered a left cross to Jones's jaw, sending him to the canvas. Some experts argued that Jones had merely slipped, but Del Valle's hopes of victory were rekindled. Despite his attempts to capitalize, Jones quickly recovered and the judges unanimously awarded him the victory.
Title Contender and Retirement
In August 2001, Del Valle faced Frenchman Bruno Girard for the WBA "regular" light heavyweight title. The bout ended in a draw. The two fighters met again in July 2002, with Girard emerging victorious by split decision. Del Valle continued to box professionally until 2004, but never regained a major title. He lived a quiet life in retirement, passing away in 2017 at the age of 48.
