Biography of Luciano Moggi

Luciano Moggi was born on July 10, 1937, in Monticiano, Italy. He started his career as a railway employee until he met Italo Allodi, one of the directors of Juventus Football Club, and began his career as a football manager. He worked in various Italian clubs, including Torino, Napoli, Roma, and Lazio, before taking on the position of general manager at Juventus in 1994.

The Calciopoli Scandal

In the spring of 2006, the Italian prosecutor's office released phone call recordings of Juventus executives, which led to numerous accusations against Moggi and his assistants. He was accused of pressuring the Italian Football Referees Association to appoint referees favorable to his club, collusion with executives from other clubs, financial manipulations, and other minor violations. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) arbitration decided to relegate Juventus to Serie B and deducted 30 points from the club before the start of the season. Moggi was banned from football for five years and fined 50,000 euros.

Legacy and Controversy

Although Juventus managed to reduce the point deduction to -17, all of Moggi's appeals were rejected. He announced that he would not return to football. During his time at Juventus, the club won the UEFA Champions League, seven Serie A titles (two of which were revoked), the Coppa Italia, four Supercoppa Italiana titles, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup. Moggi's questionable methods earned him the nickname "Lucky Luciano," a reference to the famous American gangster Salvatore Lucania.

The Involvement of Alessandro Moggi

Luciano Moggi's son, Alessandro, was also implicated in the corruption scandal in Italian football. He headed the international agency GEA World, which was found guilty of numerous violations in player transfers between clubs.
