Biography of Lyudmila Arutyunyan

Lyudmila Akopovna Arutyunyan (Armenian: Լյուդմիլա Ակոպի Արությունյան) was born on November 13, 1941, in Yerevan, Armenia. She is an Armenian political and public figure. Arutyunyan graduated from Yerevan State University in 1963 with a degree in economics. She went on to pursue further studies at Sorbonne University in Paris from 1974 to 1975 and received her qualification from the Moscow State University in 1967.

Arutyunyan started her career at Yerevan State University in 1963 as a lecturer and later became a senior lecturer, professor of sociology, head of the Department of Sociology, and dean of the Faculty of Sociology. In 1988, she served as a member of the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR.

In 1997, Arutyunyan became the director of the Center for Regional Integration and Conflict Resolution at Yerevan State University. The following year, she ran as a candidate for the presidency of Armenia. She has also held positions as a visiting professor at George Mason University's Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution in the United States and the National Institute for Demographic Studies in Paris.

Arutyunyan has been involved in various research projects, including studying the budget of urban and rural families in Armenia, social security in Armenia, the reintegration of labor emigrants returning to Armenia, the socioeconomic profile of integrated migrants in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and accessibility of social and medical services. She has also contributed to studies on public opinion regarding social reforms, the elimination of discrimination against women in Armenia, the efficiency of family benefits systems, hidden unemployment and hidden employment, social stratification in Armenia, collective memory and individual behavior, and educational reforms.

Since 1998, Arutyunyan has been a member of the Independent Research Council on Migration of the CIS and Baltic countries. She is also a member of the American Sociological Association since 2001 and the Group of Social Experts of the Council of Europe since 2002. Additionally, she serves as a member of the Council of Scientists of INTAS since 2003.
