Ludovico Scarfiotti: A Legendary Racing Career
Early BeginningsLudovico Scarfiotti, an Italian racing driver, began his career with a Fiat 1100, winning in its class at the Mille Miglia in 1956 and 1957. Through connections with the Agnelli family, he became a test driver for Ferrari.
Early Successes
Scarfiotti's first significant success came in the 1960 Targa Florio, where he finished fourth with Giulio Cabianca and Willy Mairesse. In 1962, he won the European Hill Climb Championship. In 1963, he triumphed at Sebring with John Surtees and Le Mans with Lorenzo Bandini in a Ferrari 250. He also finished second in the Targa Florio.
Formula 1 Debut
Scarfiotti debuted in Formula 1 at the 1963 Dutch Grand Prix, scoring a point for sixth place. However, an injury at the French Grand Prix ended his season. He returned in 1964, winning the 1000km of Nürburgring with Nino Vaccarella and finishing second at Mosport Park.
1965-1966: Further Success
In 1965, Scarfiotti took second place in the 1000km of Monza and won a second Hill Climb Championship. In Formula 1, he made two appearances. In 1966, he achieved his first and only Formula 1 victory at the Italian Grand Prix. He also finished second at the 1000km of Nürburgring.
Tragic Events
In 1967, Scarfiotti was one of four Ferrari drivers alongside Bandini, Mike Parkes, and Chris Amon. Despite early success, tragedy struck when Bandini crashed fatally in Monaco and Parkes was seriously injured in Spa. Scarfiotti, devastated, left Scuderia Ferrari.
Later Career and Death
Scarfiotti joined Cooper in 1968. While the cars were slow, they were reliable, allowing him to secure fourth-place finishes early in the Formula 1 season. He also raced for Porsche in various series, finishing second at Brands Hatch. However, his career came to a tragic end when he crashed fatally at Rossfeld while driving a Porsche.
