Early Life and Education
Born in Plasencia around 1490, Luis de Ávila y Zúñiga was raised by his maternal uncle, the Duke of Plasencia from the Zúñiga family.
Diplomatic Career
Ávila's diplomatic abilities earned him the trust of Emperor Charles V. He was entrusted with important missions to Popes Paul IV and Pius IV and was appointed Grand Master of the Order of Alcántara.
Military Service
Ávila accompanied the emperor on his campaigns in Africa and against the Schmalkaldic League. During the Siege of Metz in 1552, he commanded the cavalry.
Historical Work
As a historian, Ávila is renowned for his "Comentarios de la guerra de Alema?a" (Commentaries on the War of Germany), published in 1547. Although not entirely impartial, it is praised for its wit, clarity, and vivid prose style. The work was later revised by Ávila in Italian and translated into other languages. Two German translations exist: 1552 and 1858.
