Early Life and Education

Luka Paljetak was born and raised in Dubrovnik, Croatia, where he spent his life and career. He studied Croatian and English languages at the University of Zadar, where he later became an assistant professor.

Academic Career and Literary Contributions

Paljetak's academic career culminated in a doctoral degree from the University of Zagreb, where he defended his dissertation on the literary works of Ante Cetineo. As a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, he was a prolific author of poetry, children's literature, scholarly research, essays, and anthologies.

Literary Translations

Paljetak was renowned for his translations from English, French, and Slovenian. His notable works include translations of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Byron, Wilde, Joyce, and Prešeren. Together with Zlatko Tomičić, he translated a collection of poems by the Macedonian poet Konstantin Miladinov.

Literary Recognition and Legacy

Paljetak received numerous awards and honors, including the Ivan Mažuranić Award (1972), Vladimir Nazor Award twice (1984 and 2005), Ksaver Šandor Gjalski Award (2005), "Cyclops" Award (2005), Tin Ujević Award (1990), HAZU Award (1996), and the City of Dubrovnik Lifetime Achievement Award (2005). Many of his poems have been set to music and are deeply embedded in Dubrovnik and Croatian popular culture.

Death and Legacy

Luka Paljetak passed away on May 12, 2024, at the age of 81. His literary legacy continues to inspire and resonate with readers in Croatia and beyond.
