Luther Campbell, born on December 22, 1960, is an American musician, actor, and record label owner. He is best known as a member of the rap group 2 Live Crew, where he has performed under various stage names, including Captain Dick and Luke Skywalker.
Childhood and Family
Campbell grew up in a family with four brothers. His large family is now spread across the country and rarely gathers together. Campbell has five children from different relationships. He recently married Kristin Thompson on July 19, 2008, and the couple resides in Dallas, Texas.
Musical Beginnings
Campbell's interest in music emerged during his school days, where he organized discos and rap parties. In the 1980s, he became a promoter in Miami, helping to elevate the popularity of rap groups.
2 Live Crew and Legal Battles
In 1985, Campbell joined 2 Live Crew, one of the most notorious rap groups of all time. He had earlier had negative experiences with record producers and decided to create his own projects independently. However, the group's sexually explicit lyrics faced backlash and accusations of obscenity.
Campbell defended the group's lyrics as satire, but they were eventually charged with obscenity. The subsequent trial lasted several weeks and ultimately resulted in the acquittal of 2 Live Crew under the First Amendment's right to free speech. The trial turned out to benefit the group's business, leading to record sales of over 1.5 million copies.
Philanthropy and Legacy
Despite the controversy over 2 Live Crew's music, Campbell is highly regarded today. He is actively involved in philanthropy, providing scholarships to students and donating to sports associations and the Black College Fund. Ironically, Campbell prohibits his children from listening to 2 Live Crew's music.
