Lyudmyla Liashenko, Ukrainian Paralympic Skier and Biathlete
Early Life and EducationLyudmyla Liashenko was born on May 17, 1993, in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. From birth, she faced challenges with the incomplete development of her upper and lower limbs. Despite two surgeries, her left arm did not fully regain functionality. At age four, Lyudmyla moved into the Tsuryupinsk Children's Home, where she lived and studied through the 9th grade. She then attended the F.H. Ananchenko Kharkiv Business and Economic College, specializing in social work.
Sporting Journey
Lyudmyla initially focused on track and field, but in her second year of college, she began participating in rehabilitation programs at the National Center for Paralympic and Deaflympic Training and Rehabilitation in Yevpatoria. Her impressive performances in a training camp and the Ukrainian Championship earned her a spot on the reserve team for the Ukrainian Paralympic skiing team. In December 2012, she became a permanent member of the Paralympic skiing team. She is currently pursuing a degree in sports and cross-country skiing at the Kharkiv State Academy of Physical Culture.
International Debut and Career Highlights
Lyudmyla made her international debut in 2012 at the competitions in Vuokatti. In the 2013/2014 World Cup season, she achieved fourth place twice in the 10 and 6 km biathlon events and fifth place twice in the 5 km classic and 5 km freestyle skiing races. She advanced to the final of the 2013 Biathlon World Championships in Sollefteå in the middle distance event. Her consistent performance culminated in a third-place finish overall in the 2014 World Cup.
Paralympic Success
Lyudmyla represented Ukraine at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, where she came in seventh place in the 6 km and fourth place in the 10 km biathlon races. In the 15 km classic cross-country skiing event, she finished ninth. At the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, she achieved remarkable success, winning four medals. In biathlon, she became a two-time bronze medalist in the 6 and 10 km standing events. In skiing, she won a gold medal in the 2.5x4 km mixed relay and a bronze medal in the 15 km freestyle race.
Recognition and Awards
In recognition of her achievements, Lyudmyla was awarded the Order of Princess Olga, Third Class, in 2018. Her unwavering determination and resilience have made her a role model for athletes with disabilities and an inspiration to all.
