Early Life and Education
Madeleine Carolyn Carroll, an Anglo-American actress, was born on February 26, 1906, in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England. She received her education at the University of Birmingham.
Rise to Stardom in Britain
Carroll made her film debut in a British production in 1928 and quickly gained recognition for her portrayal of an aristocratic blonde. By the early 1930s, she had appeared in popular British films such as "Atlantic," "School for Scandal," and "I Was a Spy." In 1931, she took a brief hiatus from acting after marrying Captain Philip Astley.
Hitchcock Collaborations
Carroll caught the attention of acclaimed director Alfred Hitchcock in 1935. She starred in his film "The Thirty-Nine Steps" that year, earning critical acclaim, including praise from The New York Times. Hitchcock cast her again in his 1936 film "Secret Agent."
Hollywood Career
Carroll's success in Britain led to a contract with Paramount Pictures in Hollywood. She starred in notable films such as "Death of a General" (1936), "The Prisoner of Zenda" (1937), "Blockade" (1938), "Safari" (1940), "Northwest Mounted Police" (1940), "My Favorite Blonde" (1942), and "The Fan" (1949), which marked her final screen appearance.
World War II Heroism
Carroll's film career slowed down in the early 1940s following the death of her sister in a German air raid. She became a volunteer with the Red Cross and served actively in various programs during World War II. She worked in hospitals in Italy and France and was awarded the Legion of Honor for her bravery. In 1943, she became an American citizen.
Later Life and Legacy
Carroll retired from acting in 1955 after a few television roles. She died of cancer on October 2, 1987, in Marbella, Spain, at the age of 81. For her contributions to the film industry, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
