Early Life and Racing Beginnings
Manny Ayulo was born in Los Angeles to a Peruvian father and a South Carolina-born American mother. His father was a Peruvian consul. Ayulo began his racing career in amateur events during the 1940s. Alongside his teammate and close friend, Jack McGrath, he pioneered the use of roadster race cars.
AAA Championship Participation
In 1948, Ayulo debuted in the AAA Championship. His most impressive result was a second-place finish in 1954 with victories at Darlington and Milwaukee. He also earned three pole positions and amassed 59 race starts.
Indianapolis 500 Career
Ayulo participated in the Indianapolis 500 annually from 1949 to 1955. He qualified four times out of seven attempts, notably starting in fourth place on the second row in 1953. Despite four starts, he finished only twice, placing 20th in 1952 and 13th in 1954.
Formula 1 Podium Finish
Ayulo's most remarkable achievement came in 1951. Although he failed to qualify his own car, he replaced McGrath after 100 laps by agreement. McGrath had been leading the race for several laps, and Ayulo successfully finished in third place. At the time, the Indianapolis 500 formed part of the Formula 1 World Championship, awarding Ayulo and McGrath two points each.
Tragic Death
Ayulo's promising career was cut short in 1955 when he lost control during a practice lap for the Indianapolis 500. The accident occurred late in the evening, resulting in a head-on collision with a wall. Possible causes include steering failure, an unfastened seatbelt, or driver error due to fading light.
