Biography of Manolete
Manolete, whose real name was Manuel Laureano Rodriguez, was a prominent Spanish bullfighter who became a professional at the age of 17. He tragically passed away a day after sustaining fatal injuries during a bullfight. Manolete was born on July 4, 1917, in the city of Cordoba, Spain.
Family Legacy
Bullfighting ran in Manolete's blood as both his father and grandfather were matadors. Furthermore, he was the great-nephew of the legendary 19th-century bullfighter, Jose Rodriguez, known as Pepe.
Early Career
Manuel had his first serious bullfight at the age of fifteen, where he also adopted the pseudonym Manolete. Initially, the public did not perceive him as a serious bullfighter. However, everything changed when Manolete signed a contract with Jose Camara. His new manager worked extensively with him and introduced a completely different fighting technique, which differed from the one the young matador had previously used.
Rise to Fame
After completing his military service in 1938, Manolete embarked on a serious career. Instantly, he achieved great success, astonishing both the audience and critics with his composure and precise movements, which became his trademark in every bullfight. Officially, Manolete was inducted into the ranks of matadors in July 1939 in Seville.
Peak of Success
For eight years, Manolete was the most popular and highest-paid bullfighter in the world. Despite his mastery, he suffered numerous injuries throughout his dangerous career. Nevertheless, with each season, he performed an increasing number of bullfights.
Decline in Fame
Over time, the fame of the great matador began to fade as new idols of the public emerged. In an attempt to maintain the attention of spectators, Manolete engaged in a series of dangerous bullfights, competing with the new favorite of the audience, Luis Miguel Domingin. Unfortunately, one of these bullfights resulted in fatal injuries for him.
Tragic End
Despite the efforts of doctors, the renowned Spaniard passed away in the hospital on August 29, 1947. Manolete, who had become a symbol of courage for the Spaniards, had the most massive funeral in the history of Spain.
