The Heiress to the English Throne

Margaret Clifford was the sole daughter of Henry Clifford, 1st Earl of Cumberland, and Lady Eleanor Brandon, daughter of Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, and Mary Tudor. As a great-niece of Queen Elizabeth I, Margaret was a claimant to the English throne.

Early Life and Lineage

Born in 1540 at Brougham Castle, Margaret's place in the line of succession followed Prince Edward, Mary, and Elizabeth, as well as the children of Lady Frances Grey. After the deaths of Edward VI in 1553 and Lady Frances in 1559, Margaret became first in line to the throne, a position she held until her own demise in 1596.

Marriage and Family

Despite her royal lineage, Margaret's early marriage proposals were rejected by her father. In 1555, she finally wed Henry Stanley, who inherited the title of Earl of Derby in 1572. Together, they had five children: Edward, Ferdinando, William, Frances, and Martha.

The False Marriage Plot

In 1579, Margaret's opposition to Queen Elizabeth's potential marriage to the Duke of Anjou led to her arrest. Accused of witchcraft and plotting against the Queen, she was placed under house arrest. Despite an investigation, no charges were ever brought against her.

Disfavor and Imprisonment

Suspected of Catholic sympathies, Margaret was subjected to further scrutiny and frequent transfers to different prisons. Her repeated pleas to Elizabeth for mercy went unheeded, and she remained in disfavor until her death in 1596.

Descendants and Legacy

Margaret's descendants included her granddaughters, Lady Ann and Lady Venetia Stanley, who became prominent figures in the Stuart court. However, none of her lineage would ever inherit the English throne, as James I of Scotland succeeded Elizabeth upon her death.
