Margaret's Battle with Pregnancy-Sized Myoma

Margaret McMahon, a 48-year-old Belfast woman, endured a three-year ordeal where she appeared pregnant due to a growing tumor the size of a melon. Misdiagnosed initially, her ordeal was exacerbated by the lack of awareness about the condition.

A Living Nightmare: Misdiagnosis to Agony

In 2013, Margaret's abdomen swelled to alarming proportions, but doctors dismissed it as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Frustrated, she used private funds for a CT scan that revealed a 18 cm tumor. Despite an MRI confirming it as a benign myoma, Margaret remained in agony as the tumor grew, pressing on her bladder and causing constant urination.

Endless Discomfort and Confusion

Margaret's pleas for help went unanswered as doctors reassured her that the myoma was not a cause for concern. Despite severe pain in her lower back and thighs, she was told the growth had not changed. Finally, in March 2016, she was admitted to the emergency room, where nurses referred to an "unknown mass" without specifying its nature.

The Truth Revealed: A Life-Altering Diagnosis

A second CT scan Margaret paid for revealed the true extent of her condition—an 18 cm myoma embedded in her uterine wall. The news sent her into a panic, but upon returning to the clinic, she finally learned that it was not cancerous.

A Journey to Recovery: Hysterectomy and a New Life

Despite the relief, the pain from the massive tumor continued to torment Margaret. In March 2016, she underwent a hysterectomy, removing the uterus and the myoma. Her recovery was swift, and she enjoyed her first family vacation in Spain in two years.

Raising Awareness: Shedding Light on Myomas

Margaret hopes her story will inspire others to seek knowledge about myomas, a common condition that affects approximately one in three women. Understanding symptoms and treatment options is crucial for women to manage this condition effectively.
