Biography of Margaret Osborne DuPont
Margaret Osborne DuPont was an American amateur tennis player who achieved great success throughout her career. She won a total of 37 titles in Grand Slam tournaments, including six in singles, 21 in women's doubles, and 10 in mixed doubles. Her first title came in 1941 at the US Championships in the women's doubles category, while her last title was won in 1962 in the mixed doubles category at the Wimbledon tournament.
Early Life and Career
Margaret Osborne was born in Joseph, Oregon and grew up in San Francisco. By the age of twenty, she was already ranked among the top ten American female tennis players. In 1947, Margaret married William DuPont III, a member of the prominent DuPont family from Delaware who was 22 years her senior. Unfortunately, William suffered from poor health. After their marriage, he demanded that Margaret return home immediately after her matches and prohibited her from traveling to Australia. As a result, Margaret never had the opportunity to compete in the Australian Championships, which began offering financial support for participants during that time. Margaret and William had a son, William DuPont IV, but eventually divorced in 1964, one year before his death.
Later Life and Legacy
Following the death of her husband, Margaret continued to live in the eastern United States to be closer to her son. In 1966, she joined forces with Margaret Varner Bloss, her partner in the later years of her career, in breeding racehorses on a farm near El Paso. In the mid-1990s, they were recognized as owners of the top 20 thoroughbred horses by "Thoroughbred Times". Margaret Osborne DuPont passed away in El Paso in 2012 at the age of 94.
Achievements and Records
Margaret Osborne DuPont's career was marked by numerous achievements and records. She won a total of 37 Grand Slam titles, with 13 in women's doubles (12 of them with Louise Brough Clapp) and 9 in mixed doubles. She reached 15 finals in women's doubles at the US Championships (14 of them with Brough Clapp) and 12 finals in mixed doubles (6 with Bill Talbert). Margaret also played in the singles final five times, including the longest women's final in US Championships history in 1948, where she defeated Brough Clapp with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 15-13.
Margaret Osborne DuPont was also a ten-time winner of the Wightman Cup, a team competition between the United States and Great Britain. She captained the American team nine times during her career.
