Biography of Margaret Churchill

Margaret Churchill was an American theater and film actress, whose career spanned the early days of cinema. She was born on December 25, 1910, in Kansas City, Missouri. Margaret's father was a theater producer who owned a chain of theaters, but he passed away when she was just 10 years old. Margaret grew up in New York and attended a specialized school for child actors, who were already working on stage, in films, and in vaudeville shows. She later enrolled in the Theatre Guild Dramatic School.

Early Success on Broadway and Film

At the age of 12, Margaret Churchill made her debut on Broadway in the comedy play "Why Not?". By the time she was 16, she was already playing leading female roles on stage, and her performances in plays such as "House of Shadows," "The Wild Man of Borneo," and "Skidding" on Broadway gained her much acclaim. One of the executives from the film company "20th Century Fox Film" saw Margaret on stage and offered her a contract immediately after her film debut in the comedy "The Diplomats" in 1929. That same year, she played leading roles in five more films, two of which featured Paul Muni, a star of the 1930s and 1940s.

Versatile Film Career

Throughout her career, Margaret Churchill had the opportunity to work with some of Hollywood's most remarkable leading men, and her repertoire was not limited to one or two genres. She starred in the adventure drama "The Big Trail" with John Wayne in 1930, which became a classic of cinema and marked Wayne's first leading role. She also appeared alongside Spencer Tracy in the thriller "Quick Millions," Will Rogers in the comedy "Ambassador Bill," Warner Oland in the detective film "Charlie Chan Carries On," and George O'Brien in the western "Riders of the Purple Sage" based on Zane Grey's novel.

Personal Life and Later Years

On July 15, 1933, Margaret Churchill married actor George O'Brien, one of the leading heartthrobs of Hollywood during the silent film era, who later became a star of B-movies. They divorced in 1948 and had three children, including Darcy O'Brien, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and English professor, and Orin O'Brien, a musician who has been playing double bass in the New York Philharmonic since 1966. Their eldest son, Brien, passed away during childhood. Margaret moved to Rome in 1960 and later settled in Lisbon in 1970. She returned to the United States only in the 1990s and lived near her son's family. Margaret Churchill passed away on January 9, 2000, at the age of 89, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, due to natural causes.
