Early Life and TrainingMarie Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun was born in Paris in 1755. She began her artistic training at a young age, studying under the renowned painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard.
Domestic Scenes and Portraiture
Vigée Le Brun's paintings were heavily influenced by the domestic life of the French middle and upper classes. Her works captured scenes of family affection, children, and elegant society. While her compositions lacked originality and often exhibited a sentimental sweetness, they were meticulously executed, showcasing her exceptional draftsmanship and modeling skills.
Engravings and Illustrations
In addition to painting, Vigée Le Brun also practiced engraving. She reproduced several of Fragonard's compositions in etchings. She also provided illustrations for Choderlos de Laclos' infamous novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses."
Artistic Legacy
Vigée Le Brun's works were highly successful during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. She achieved both critical and popular acclaim for her paintings, which are now housed in museums around the world. Two of her notable works, "Maternal Happiness" and "The Artist Painting a Portrait of a Female Musician," can be found in the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
