At first glance, it may seem like an extraordinary stroke of luck—many women dream of looking 20 or even 18 at the age of 32. Unfortunately, for Maria Audete, the term "luck" hardly applies—at 32, she looks like she's only a few months old.
An Atypical Condition
Hypothyroidism, a rare condition, results from a deficiency of essential thyroid hormones, which leads to stunted physical development. In adults, this typically manifests as myxedema, characterized by body-wide swelling. In children, it can lead to cretinism, a condition caused by hormone deficiency.
While Maria's case is somewhat unusual, it generally aligns with this pattern. In theory, if the condition had been diagnosed early, Maria could have been treated. However, Audete was born into a poor family that could not afford the expensive surgery.
Over the past 32 years, Maria has experienced no growth spurt—she continues to behave like a typical infant. The 32-year-old woman remains non-verbal and relies on others for her every need.
Family Support
Despite the fact that curing Maria's condition at this stage is unlikely, her situation is not as dire as it may first appear. The Audete family more than makes up for what they lack in financial means with their love for their "child." Maria's biological mother passed away 13 years ago; since then, her father has remarried.
Maria's stepmother, Dora, has a particularly warm relationship with her unusual stepdaughter—she describes Maria as a "gift from heaven." Dora believes that caring for Maria is a divine responsibility. After all, what parent hasn't dreamed of keeping their child as a little one forever?
New Hope
Recently, there has been some good news for Maria—treatment that could potentially help her walk and eat independently without financial burden. Representatives from the University of Ceara's medical faculty have offered to provide these procedures for free. While the effectiveness of these treatments remains to be seen, the prognosis is optimistic.
