Immigration to Thailand and Encounter with a Nigerian Boyfriend
In 2013, Dapirka moved from Krasnodar, Russia to Thailand to work as a tour guide. She hoped to earn enough money to purchase an apartment in her hometown. Her plans took a fateful turn when she met "Nick," a charming Nigerian claiming to be a professional footballer. Nick showered her with gifts and promised to join her in Brazil.
Betrayal and Deceit
In July 2014, Nick arranged for Dapirka to travel alone to São Paulo, Brazil, claiming unforeseen circumstances. He provided her with $1,000 and a ticket, promising to join her soon. After approximately two weeks in Brazil, Dapirka received further instructions from Nick to retrieve a bag from an acquaintance and travel to Laos via Vietnam. Unwittingly, she flew to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on August 23, 2014.
Arrest and Severe Penalties
Upon her arrival at Ho Chi Minh airport, Dapirka was detained by customs officials. A search revealed nearly 3 kilograms of cocaine concealed in her luggage and a handbag gifted to her by Nick. According to Vietnamese law, mere cultivation of prohibited plants carries a sentence of six months to three years, manufacture up to seven years, and aggravated circumstances can lead to 15 years in prison. Drug trafficking, as Dapirka was accused of, could result in a maximum sentence of 20 years or even death.
Con Game and the Role of Chib Eze
Investigations revealed that the Nigerian "footballer," Chib Eze (or Matthew Chili), used a well-established modus operandi. He befriended unsuspecting women, who unknowingly became drug mules for him. Eze could distribute illicit substances worldwide without putting his own life at risk. Dapirka was identified as one such "blind mule."
Legal Battles and International Support
Dapirka's trial was repeatedly adjourned due to the lack of evidence proving her knowledge of the drugs or suspicious behavior. Russian authorities and her lawyer, Sunkar Nurmagambetov, worked tirelessly to defend her case. The Russian Foreign Ministry closely monitored the proceedings to ensure her rights were upheld.
Life Sentence and Appeal
Despite the efforts, Dapirka was sentenced to life in prison on May 4, 2018. Although devastated, she maintained her resilience and expressed hope that her family would remain strong. Her relatives and lawyer are determined to appeal the verdict.
