Early Career and International Coaching
José Manuel Martins Barretto is a Portuguese football coach with a Pro coaching license. He began his coaching career in Russia as a fitness coach for FC Lokomotiv Moscow under Yuri Semin. In 2003, he took over as head coach of the Ghana national team until 2004.
Return to Portugal and Club Management
After leaving the Ghana national team, Barretto returned to Portugal to coach Marítimo from the city of Funchal. In 2005, he made the move to the United Arab Emirates and became the manager of Al-Nasr SC of Dubai. However, his stay in Dubai was short-lived, and he returned to Moscow to become an assistant coach for FC Dynamo Moscow.
Continued Club Coaching in Portugal and Cyprus
In 2006, Barretto once again returned to Portugal to coach Naval 1º de Maio until 2007. He then took over at Cypriot club AEL Limassol until 2008.
Assistant Coaching Role at FC Kuban Krasnodar
In 2009, Barretto became an assistant coach at FC Kuban Krasnodar, working alongside Sergei Ovchinnikov. Barretto was formally registered as head coach due to Ovchinnikov's lack of a Pro coaching license.
Move to Angola and Retirement
After leaving Kuban Krasnodar, Barretto became the manager of Angolan club Recreativo Caála in June 2009, signing a 1.5-year contract. This marked his final coaching position before he retired from football management.
