Early Life and Education
Swiss conductor Mario Venzago began his musical journey as a pianist. He then pursued studies in conducting under Erich Schmid in Zurich and Hans Swarowsky in Vienna.
Orchestral Engagements
Early Career (1978-1986)In 1978, Venzago embarked on a series of orchestral appointments. He led the Winterthur Municipal Orchestra until 1986, while also collaborating with the Orchestra of the Romande Switzerland and the Lucerne Opera Orchestra.
Opera Houses and Philharmonic Orchestras (1986-1994)
From 1986 to 1989, Venzago served as the General Music Director of the Heidelberg Opera. He subsequently directed the German Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra from 1989 to 1992. In parallel, he led the Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra in Graz from 1991 to 1994.
Major Symphony Orchestras (1997-2002)
From 1997 to 2003, Venzago acted as Music Director of the Basel Symphony Orchestra. During this period, he also held simultaneous appointments as Principal Conductor of the National Orchestra of the Basque Country (1998-2001) and Chief Guest Conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra (2002-2003).
Indiana Symphony Orchestra (2002-Present)
In 2002, Venzago became Music Director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. From 2004 to 2007, he simultaneously led the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra as its Chief Conductor. Venzago continues to hold the position of Music Director with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
