Early Life and Training
Marita Koch displayed exceptional speed from a young age. Even as a young girl, she effortlessly outpaced older boys. Her talent caught the attention of coach Wolfgang Meier when she was just 15 years old. Meier, who was involved in shipbuilding at the time, took her under his wing and became her mentor. One of Koch's most remarkable achievements was her record-breaking run in the 400-meter race. On October 6, 1985, at the World Cup meeting in Canberra, Australia, she set a time of 47.6 seconds, a record that has yet to be surpassed. Koch trained rigorously in the weeks leading up to this race, continuously proving her speed and endurance. Rumors even circulated that she ran the 200 meters in 21.56 seconds a week before the race, although this claim was never confirmed.

Koch's main rival in the 400-meter race was Czech athlete Jarmila Kratochvílová, who, like Koch, has surpassed the 48-second barrier. In the early 1980s, Kratochvílová held the world record in this event. She also holds the current world record in the 800-meter race, set in 1983.

In addition to her individual achievements, Koch was part of the East German relay team that set several world records. The team set a new record in the 4x100-meter relay in 1979 and 1983. They also won silver at the 1980 Olympics and set new records in the 4x400-meter relay in 1980, 1982, and 1984. Koch won the European Championships in the 400 meters in 1978, 1982, and 1986, and she still holds the European record in the 200-meter race.

Retirement and Controversy
Marita Koch retired from athletics in 1987 due to an Achilles tendon injury. She wanted to dedicate more time to her family, and her husband, Wolfgang, now manages his own sports store in Rostock. Koch's records brought her worldwide acclaim but also raised suspicions of doping. It was rumored that she used banned substances, although no evidence was ever found to support these claims. Koch has always denied using steroids, but there is a letter suggesting she indirectly acknowledged it.
