A Miraculous Survival: Brazilian Boy's Heart Pierced by Barbecue Skewer
The Accident
On January 18, 2018, 11-year-old Marivaldo José da Silva was playing on a staircase outside his home in Toritama, Brazil. In a tragic accident, he lost his balance and fell onto a barrel of metal barbecue skewers. One of the skewers pierced Marivaldo below his left shoulder, passed through his heart, and exited his chest.
The Discovery and Treatment
Marivaldo was rushed to a nearby hospital, where his condition was stabilized. Upon arriving at a specialized treatment center, doctors discovered the metal rod had pierced his heart, evidenced by its vibration in sync with his heartbeat.
The Complex Surgery
Dr. Andrea Rolim and her team performed a 90-minute surgery to remove the impaled object. "The skewer was inside the heart muscle and was pulsating with the beating of the heart," she recalled. Rolim added, "The fact that the rod was not removed before Marivaldo reached the hospital was crucial for his survival."
A Delicate Procedure
The surgery required meticulous care. The team created an opening in Marivaldo's chest to expose the severity of the damage. The skewer had created a clean hole through his body, entering on one side and exiting on the other. Using electrocautery, the team carefully removed the rod and repaired the perforated areas.
A Boy's Courage and Support
"Marivaldo showed tremendous courage and composure throughout this ordeal," said Dr. Rolim. "His family's calmness also played a vital role in his recovery."
A Medical Marvel
Cardiologist Cláudia Albuquerque stated, "Marivaldo underwent extensive tests, including an echocardiogram, and fortunately, no major damage was detected to his heart. He is breathing unassisted and receiving antibiotics to prevent infection."
A True Miracle
Albuquerque concluded, "There is no doubt that Marivaldo is a survivor. The multidisciplinary medical team provided exceptional care, but a higher power was also at play."
