Biography of Mark Adamo
Mark Adamo is an American composer and librettist of Italian descent. He was born in 1962 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Adamo completed his education at Holy Cross High School in Willingboro Township, New Jersey, and went on to study at New York University on a full scholarship for his exceptional abilities in playwriting.
He later obtained his Bachelor's degree in music from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he was awarded the Theodore Presser Prize for his outstanding achievements during his studies.
Operas and Libretto
Although Adamo has composed numerous chamber, choral, and orchestral music, his main success has come from his operas and libretti. His most renowned works include "Little Women" and "Lysistrata, or The Nude Goddess".
"Little Women," based on the famous novel by Louisa May Alcott, brought Adamo his greatest fame. The opera premiered at the Houston Grand Opera in 1998 and has since been performed in over 65 productions worldwide.
His second opera, "Lysistrata, or The Nude Goddess," debuted in March 2005 at the Houston Grand Opera and was later presented at the New York City Opera in March 2006.
Other Achievements
In May 2003, Adamo participated in the Atlantic Center for the Arts. He has also written critical articles for various publications, including "The Washington Post," "Stagebill," "Opera News," and "Star-Ledger."
In addition to his musical accomplishments, Adamo is known for his openly gay lifestyle. He resides in New York with his partner, composer John Corigliano, and they officially registered their marriage in California in August 2008.
In January 2009, it was announced that Adamo would be collaborating with the San Francisco Opera. His opera, "The Gospel of Mary Magdalene," is scheduled to premiere in June 2013.
