Biography of Mark Castillo

Mark Castillo is an American guitarist, vocalist, composer, and songwriter. He is one of the founders and members of the band Del Castillo. Mark grew up in the Rio Grande Valley, in the city of Brownsville, Texas. Inspired by the talent and success of his older brother, Rick Castillo, he began teaching himself to play the guitar at the age of 14.

Early Career

Mark did not pursue guitar professionally until 1990 when he enrolled at the University of Texas in Brownsville. There, he studied music theory, solfege, guitar practice, and joined the university's Latin/jazz band. In 1991, Mark became a member of a musical group called Kickstart and began establishing a reputation as a guitarist. After over three years of performances with Kickstart, Mark left the band to continue his education at the Texas A&M College of Medicine and Biological Sciences.

Vivid and Del Castillo

While studying at college, Mark and a few fellow students formed a musical group called Vivid. In 1996, after graduating from college, Mark and Vivid relocated to Austin, Texas, and started performing regularly on the famous 6th Street, as well as in various other cities in Texas and even in Europe. During his time with Vivid, Mark joined a rock band called Milhouse, where he first met Mike Zeoli, the drummer of Del Castillo.

Del Castillo and Chingon

Mark's first CD with Milhouse was recorded and released by his brother, Rick Castillo. In this album, Mark showcased his mastery of the Spanish guitar in an instrumental composition he wrote called "Para Mija Linda," dedicated to his future wife. This song inspired Mark to further explore Spanish guitar music. He composed several instrumental pieces and began collaborating with Alex Ruiz, who wrote lyrics for some of the melodies.

Mark presented these songs to his brother, Rick, who suggested that the Castillo brothers combine their creative abilities and talents. Thus, Del Castillo was formed. Currently, Mark Castillo continues to write songs and music and performs as a guitarist and vocalist with Del Castillo. Alongside his brother and bandmates in Del Castillo, Mark is also a part of the music collective Chingon, created by director Robert Rodriguez.

Notable Achievements

Mark and Rick Castillo were among the six musicians on the planet to participate in the presentation of the Gibson Dark Fire guitar. The brothers showcased the new guitar at an event held at Antone's club in Austin, Texas, on December 15, 2008.
